Writing or Blogging: Follow your Heart or Listen to your Mind

image

How can I not Write/Blog on a matter, which is an integral part of  one’s life or just say my identity? Writing is an art of self-expression, no doubt about it. Writing for me has always been an introspective element manifested or revealed through your own style, taste and talent. It always feels way lighter and better to vocalise one’s wandering thoughts by penning or typing it down.

But contemporary outgrowth of blogging has given writing a totally new dimension. Blogging, I wonder has become an offshoot or a new breed of writing, in broader sense . The purpose of this note is to seek for the ways to resolve the dilemma, which I am sure we all writers/bloggers face at some point of time:

Writing or Blogging: Follow your Heart or Listen to your Mind

I have been writing for almost eighteen years from my adolescence….but blogging is a recent activity. Days before blogging when I used to write only for myself, or some of my close patrons; It was all about creative vent, articulation, power of imagination or may be a narrative testimony. Or just as simple as for a real feel of repose and comfort. So it was more like, I was following my heart.

But now with blogging for larger, unknown audiences, apart from all the preceding factors, few more parameters which are being added are – appropriate choice of topics, words and format , curtailing of raw, under baked thoughts and some more which I will be elaborating few lines down. Basically, this time the mind is overpowering the heart. With blogging now, It’s more of a responsible writing for me. As I always believe that writing goes way beyond self-expression. It has that immense power of influencing minds and culture. Writing affects eternity in that sense.

And that’s where my frustration arises from. I cannot just write for the fun of writing, like any hogwash or gibberish or just for the sake of herd following. It has to be that much worth albeit humorous or sombre.

After managing my hours in a day, being a mom, wife and me-time which includes my writing pursuit and reading for real not just skimming and scanning around, I just beseech for a miraculous intervention. If only god could provide me with twenty eight hours a day, I guess that would suffice my need for time being. With the blogging scene around, quite considerably one has to spend time to reach out; searching for the like-minded sources or people. You can call it networking in simple term and trying to fit into that new found, hopeful blogger community.

Now with all these, past few days of my tour de force into the real world of blogging has made me reflect and introspect a handful of queries:

  • Why do I write

To be read or to be liked. To elaborate, I observed painfully some of them like your blogs or posts even without reading it. Hopefully I am that good or may be my profile picture is that enduring.

  • What should I write –

Something which touched or troubled me deeply and I felt the urge to express it to the world, sort of speak your heart out with your signature creative touch. Or rather be a part of the daily contests for product promotion commercials – being with the crowd as that creates more visibility. On a lighter vein, they have given me back a nostalgic feel of my school years, the best days of my life. I do feel like a school girl with my neat hair braids, while trying to attempt one of those creative exercises studiously.

  • For whom I write –

My own country people in this case India or the whole world family which beckons me as a basic fellow human being. As culturally sensitive issues require different approach, understanding and handling.

  • Where will it lead me to –

Now question in this case is a break-even point as an individual you want to achieve; not just financially but personal aspiration and fulfilment too. So comes the part where will it lead me to, Really! after all this toil and grey matter jugglery…A self-published Kindle Writer/a not-so-leading Freelancer/ a top Blogger(which seems doubtful)/ a Renowned Writer(did I tell you my latest secret desire)/ or Just a regular personal diary girl(which many of us hold).

Lastly the quirkiest,

  • When should I write –

I read at some places, which elaborately elucidates to publish your articles on weekends, while other preach for week days depending on various intermingled factors; indeed with their sound reasonings and pie charts. They all seem so confused though with lots of hypothesis which makes my weary heart more bewildered.

(A quick note : I don’t even want to dwell into the worlds of choice of SEOs and plug ins, RSS feed, social media shares, co promotion and several estranged blog awards to keep this article lesser complicated.)

No two ways about it, Blogging has created new vistas and raised new hopes in the heart of many a budding writer and potential bloggers. The world as a platform served to us, which our forefathers did not have fathomed in their slightest dreams, is a boon as well as a bane in itself. This has given plenty of channels to express. Plenty, in turn has led to complexity.

What hurts is that all these has led to more of casual approach towards writing bordering to mediocre, contended with sub standard. There are people who write, and then others who can write and lastly some, who are good writers. There lies a distinct difference between these three. But how to decide who is what? May be reading and more reading will aid. Perhaps somewhere we ourself know that we can write or not in the subconscious level even if we don’t agree or acknowledge in our cognizance.

All this has made my writer heart more despondent and disillusioned. If I try to do justice to one, I am being inattentive to the other, which I don’t want to for known good reasons. Nevertheless, most of these ramblings have given rise to a state of tug-of-war within me as to follow my heart or listen to the mind….to be precise; focus more on writing or blogging with much of time constraint.

Following your heart may not always be that logical or plausible, but for sure will relinquish us with the pure vigour of  that unadulterated joy. Listening to your mind alone might be a trail towards the right path, but more calculating and gives us lesser contentment in terms of freedom of expression and raw exuberance. A balance between the two is the right approach and that’s a fine line too. With experience and time by my side, I will surely learn to harmonise between these two – writing and blogging.

This note is incomplete without a mention though. That I have come across quite a few of the writings/blogs occasionally during this dig, which are absolute ingenious. What a delight they are to your intellect and senses – creativity incarnated and compelling writing style. I feel glad as they have touched and amused my heart and inspired my spine to write better in some way or other. They flourish because of the virtue of their merit. And trust me on this, that they will prevail till the last.

Life is a big teacher and so do time if only we have an eager heart and a mind filled with willingness. All I know, this time I did follow my heart as I fiddle my pen through this post. But with the hope that it will strike a chord with your heart as well and appeal to your mind too….My readers, ‘do enlighten me as to how you go about this whole formidable affair’?:

  1. Following your heart may be the right choise since altering your thoughts for others sake isn’t right for a writer or even a blogger.
That Why do I write portion certainly made me laugh.

  4. Very interesting to read your thoughts on each of the questions. Good to know of your long and rewarding association with writing. My take on “Follow your Heart or Listen to your Mind” is I’d prefer to follow my heart when I am calm in the mind. If my mind gets disturbed then I know what my heart says may not be right for me.

    Many thanks and cheers 🙂

  5. If I followed my mind I would never write. It says, ”You are not good enough, you have no story to tell. What makes your story worth telling? Why try to write? You don’t have an editor that you desperately need. You don’t know where the commas belong and your spelling is horrendous. Just stop now before you hurt yourself.”

My heart says, ”Write because you want to write. You know you always have. You have a story to tell even if you are the only one listing. Don’t worry about the mistakes. You are a human not God. Rejoice that you are doing what has been on your heart for a long time. You are brave.”

  6. I can so understand where you are coming from. I am going through a similar period now. It is difficult to know how much to spend on what. I am learning to follow my hear, but also to realize that I need to slow down and use my mind as well to reason out time for me to get out my own stories and write more than just comments or short blurbs. Perhaps it is best to remember that writing can be a compilation of both heart and mind. As we are drawn to write about what we are concerned about and what touches our heart, what makes us think, what makes us more aware.

  7. I just want you to know that I am not among those “liking” your post without reading it. If I click “like,” I am saying directly to you, “Chaitali Bhattacharjee, I enjoyed what I just read.” 🙂

  8. Appreciate the thoughtful writing, on this post and the rest of your blog. That is wonderful that writing enables you to recapture the feelings and wonderful nuances of your childhood memories. I understand all too well the hunger for more hours in the day, but you look like you are well on your way as a blogger. Thanks so much for connecting and putting yourself on my radar.

  9. I don’t understand why people would ‘like’ your post without reading it. I have the same issues on my blog. A person will like several of my entries all within a minute. I know at that point that they’ve never read a word. So sad! Anyway, I enjoy reading your blog, though I don’t always comment.

    • Thank you for your time….for me reading and writing go hand in hand….if I like an article…I do like….there might arise a need to comment or not depending upon the interest it created on me…I agree with you what you said…I wrote this in pure zest few days before while it was a start up for me…thanks again

  10. In the Bible the 10 commandments are finally condensed into 2. Similarly I’m tempted to condense your observations into just one: Let words come from the depths of your (writer’s) heart and all the rest will follow. You have given very good suggestions.

  11. These are some really fair questions Chaitali, something which every blogger should go through at some point of time and realize the purpose of what they do and why they do it.. The HOW is a fairly easy question compared to all of these 🙂

  12. Lovely article. More than the content, I loved the way you have presented it, so true. I echo the same sentiments as you when it comes to writing. I started writing to vent my feelings, thoughts which otherwise were stuck in my mind making me restless. There is a lot I want to say about this article, but would simply sum up by saying it has inspired me write and write good.

  13. First of all, thank you for sharing your perspectives.
I guess the most important question to be asked here is ‘Why do you write?’ When I ask myself this question, the answer is- ‘Because I cannot stop myself. Whenever I am moved or enthralled or overwhelmed, writing is an automatic consequence.’ So then, am I writing for myself? Not really. Because my joy is multiplied if I can make somebody else feel just as overwhelmed. This is where reaching out comes in. If your words can move people and make a difference to their perception of the world, there is nothing like it. When one writes from life, then one invariably reaches out. Perhaps not to everybody out there, but to the ones who are needy…and to the ones like you.
In the early years of blogging, I found it a very rewarding endeavour. Simply because there were fewer people out there- largely people who loved to read and to write. Blogging tremendously contributed to my growth as a writer because the readers took away the full-stop at my thoughts and broadened my horizon. But now, I feel that the blogosphere is dominated by people of all sorts. One has to work harder to discover people who maintain its essence. It is more of ‘You promote me…and I will promote you.’ That is the tragedy with all art forms. Sometimes your marketing skills are more important than your originality of thought, creativity and passion. Just like reality shows. It brings down the standards.
Yet, I am glad there are still enough good people around 🙂

  14. Great post Chaitali, not only for your perspective and thoughts but also for I felt the same questions come to my mind too when I read it. I agree that blogging is no longer a virtual space where we could speak out our heart but it’s now become a meaningful piece of work or art that your regular readers will relate to. I feel it’s a commendable job for those who make it to write a post a day. I also likes the point of writing for your else or for others. These are the questions that if answered in introspection will define the writer in oneself. Very nice article.

  15. Hi there! am new to this world and yes…i need a forty eight hours day to complete all that I have to.True ,blogging kind of brought in those invisible, unspoken veils on my inner freedom.Suddenly i realised i withheld as someone was going to read it,.It is no more my personal musing for my expression and viewing only.I too am facing a sense of competition as to when where why and how much to write..how often to keep this posting thing..i feel bewildered .Finally I have decided to stay back in my heart and write only when i am inspired and post when i feel like.No race for me.I disliked competition as a kid.I feel all have their unique space..so i am happy to read this …lots of love..

  16. Reading the post and going through the comments, I see every blogger relates to those questions and so do I. I believe writing and blogging at the end of day is your love for writing, your insights, and it’s you. hence, your style.

For me (and guess for everybody out there) every single like and comment is a feedback for the effort put in, a praise that one finds a smile, satisfaction and happiness in. I don’t “just” want to be liked, but want to be read is what every word written on each blog tells me (and to every reader) I hope people understand that!

Chaitali, as I say, your posts go straight to the heart. I at times am amused to see how much thought, detail and time you put into a post before hitting that publish button seeing the balance of your thoughts and content.
(:D sorry if the comment is a bit lengthier ).

    • Let me give you company and make my comment little lengthier too… Thanks for the words…let me share …you can put across your imaginations, creativity or inspiration, but once in a while it’s the honest confessions which strikes a chord or two…. Quite honestly Shanx, I am not able to do justice to this blogging thing at all. I have a small boy and with it comes his study, sickness, tantrums and attention and what not…I hardly get time to write….somehow manage to squeeze whatever time I can steal in between…for a post I just need to stretch two hours may be and that’s it…where’s the time…anyhow I read others blog too and interact, that takes my considerable time…

  17. Enjoyed reading your views on writing vs blogging, Chaitali.. I was having similar kind of thoughts going on for few days now. Lets write because we want to, because we can’t go ahead without writing and lets blog because through blogging and networking I found a lot of amazing bloggers and writers. if it wasn’t for blogging I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to read your blog.. 🙂

  18. Well, for me writing is feeling. If feelings are there, words automatically take birth in my mind. And really I cant just promote a post without reading/ liking it. Find it so unjustified.

Following our heart is sometimes difficult but always makes us happy 🙂

  19. Good one! I would recommend to follow the heart. When I am in a dilemma of whether to be politically correct or write what I want, I follow the latter. As, did that not bring in the ‘likes’ or followers in the first place? I have also noted that when I write what I ‘should’ write, I get lesser likes/views. But when writing what I ‘want to write’, better response.

I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog.
A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.
